5 Mistakes To Avoid with Pots/Container

Toni Jefferson

When it comes to both gardening and cooking, I’ve learned the little things make the biggest difference. A small adjustment can save a plant or a meal. Here’s how.

I used to think bigger was better. I’d take a baby plant and throw it into a giant pot like I was giving it a mansion. And then I’d wonder why it looked sad and stuck. The truth? Too small and the roots choke, too big and the soil stays soggy, drowning the plant.

Now I size up one pot at a time. From a 1 gallon to a 3, from a 3 to a 7. No shortcuts. My mango tree almost didn’t make it because I gave it too much love in the wrong pot. The moment I corrected it, new growth came in like it was saying finally, thank you.

👉 I break this down in my video: 5 Mistakes To Avoid with Pots/Containers.

In the Kitchen: Don’t Panic About Salt 🍲

We’ve all done it, added one shake too many, and suddenly your food tastes like the ocean. Instead of tossing the whole pot, here’s what I do:

  • Drop in a peeled potato while it simmers. It’ll soak up some of that salt.
  • No potato? Add a splash of vinegar or squeeze of lime to balance things out.

That little save has rescued more meals than I can count. Because listen, nobody has time for wasted food.

Whether it’s a plant or a pot of food, the small details matter. Check your container sizes, watch your seasonings, and don’t be afraid to adjust. It’s those little course corrections that keep everything and everyone growing strong.
