Accessibility

I want this site to work for everybody who wants to grow food, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, or need larger text. This page says plainly where I am with that, what I have fixed, and how to tell me when something is in your way.

I read these myself and I aim to reply within three business days.

What I am working toward

The standard is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. It is the one most people use as the benchmark for a website being usable with assistive technology.

I am not going to claim this site fully meets it. That would not be true, and it would not help you. I am working through it, and this page gets updated as I go.

What is done

  • Form fields on the contact page are properly labelled, so a screen reader announces what each box is for.
  • Form errors are announced rather than shown only in colour.
  • Text colours across the site meet the contrast minimum against their backgrounds.
  • Buttons and tap targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
  • Keyboard focus is visible as you move through the page.
  • Images carry alternative text describing what is in them.
  • Headings are in a real order so you can navigate by heading instead of scrolling.

What I know still needs work

  • A few older recipe titles have emoji in them, which a screen reader reads out loud. I am removing those.
  • Some older posts have images whose alternative text is thin. I am rewriting them.
  • Embedded videos come from YouTube and I do not control their player.
  • Captions on my videos are automatic. I am working on correcting them, and Haitian and Caribbean food words are usually where they go wrong.

You do not have to. Email me at info@rootedinjs.com and I will read you what is on any page, take an order by email, or send you a plain text version of any guide or recipe. That offer is real, not a formality.

On accessibility widgets

I do not use one. Those overlay tools promise to fix accessibility with one line of code and they do not fix the underlying page. I would rather do the actual work, even though it is slower.
