Accessibility

I want this site to work for everybody who wants to grow food, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, or need larger text. This page says plainly where I am with that and how to tell me when something is in your way. I would rather be honest about what is not fixed yet than post a page that sounds finished.

What I am working toward

The standard is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. It is the one most people use as the benchmark for a website being usable with assistive technology.

I am not going to claim this site meets it. That would not be true, and it would not help you. I am working through it, and this page gets updated as I go.

What I have found so far

I went looking for problems on purpose. Here is what turned up.

• Form fields on the contact page were not properly labelled, so a screen reader could not announce what each box was for. A fix is written and waiting to go live.
• Form errors were shown only by colour. A fix is written and waiting to go live.
• Several text colours did not have enough contrast against their backgrounds. I measured them and picked replacements that pass. Those are written and waiting to go live too.
• Some older recipe titles have emoji in them, which a screen reader reads out loud. I am taking those out.
• Some older posts have alternative text on images that is too thin to be useful. I am rewriting them.
• Some posts have no cover image at all. I am working through those.

What I have not checked yet

I am telling you this so you know the difference between fixed and not looked at.

• Whether every button and tap target is big enough to hit comfortably.
• Whether keyboard focus stays visible everywhere as you move through a page.
• Whether headings run in a real order on every page, so you can navigate by heading instead of scrolling.
• How the site behaves at large text sizes and heavy zoom.

Things I do not control

• Embedded videos come from YouTube and I do not control their player.
• Captions on my videos start out automatic. I correct them when I can, and Haitian and Caribbean food words are usually where they go wrong.
• Checkout runs on Shopify, so parts of it are theirs, not mine.

You do not have to. Email me at info@rootedinjs.com and I will read you what is on any page, take an order by email, or send you a plain text version of any guide or recipe. That offer is real, not a formality.

On accessibility widgets

I do not use one. Those overlay tools promise to fix accessibility with one line of code and they do not fix the underlying page. I would rather do the actual work, even though it is slower.
