5 Easy Crops to Kickstart Your Florida Garden This Month

Toni Jefferson

Listen… it’s hard doing this garden thing while taking care of kids. I’m talking toys in the raised beds, someone yelling “Mommy!” while I’m trying to plant, and little hands picking tomatoes before they’re even close to ready.

Let me introduce myself, I’m Toni, a Florida mom who started gardening because I wanted fresh food for my family, but I needed it to be doable. I don’t have time for fussy plants that need babying. I need crops that can handle the Florida heat, a little neglect, and still give me something to cook at the end of the day.

If you’re new here (or just tired of plants that quit on you), here are my five ride-or-die crops that I plant when I want guaranteed results.

  1. Sweet Potatoes – You can forget about them and they’ll still grow. Bonus: the leaves make a great sauté.
  2. Peppers – Colorful, productive, and they don’t complain about the heat.
  3. Okra – This one grows so fast you’ll feel like a pro.
  4. Seminole Pumpkin – Florida native, pest-resistant, and doesn’t mind when I skip a watering day.
  5. Collard Greens – Always ready for the pot, and they keep producing.

Quick Tip:
Grow what your family actually eats. I skip eggplant because nobody in my house touches it, but I’ll grow peppers all year long.

What’s your go-to easy crop? Drop it in the comments , I’m always looking for more low-maintenance wins.
